Wondering what is behind all the hype that surrounds the emergence of social and collaborative media? Do you have a personal facebook page or group site and want to know how to use it more effectively to build stronger communities and business networks? Would you like to learn how to create cost-effective viral marketing and PR campaigns for your new venture or organization through cutting-edge social media strategies?

If so, attend WAAM's talk and dinner discussion THIS SUNDAY, April 27th (6:30 – 9 pm) on "Social Media Networking: Building Community, Driving Organic Marketing and PR Initiatives" led by media studies expert Deb Block-Schwenk and Bryan Person, social media evangelist and blogger at BryanPerson.com. At this free WAAM talk, Deb and Bryan will examine the emerging trends on how social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook and online tools such as blogs, podcasts, and wikis can be used to build community and drive grassroots marketing and pr initiatives for your organization and business.

All WAAM events are open to Wellesley and MIT alumni and interested individuals. ~$12 per person for dinner take-out. Most likely ordering Thai or Tibetan food. Please indicate in your RSVP here if you have dietary constraints. Presentation starts at 7pm followed by a Q&A discussion; meet and dine with fellow WAAMers a half-hour earlier at 6:30 pm. Feel free to invite other alumni and colleagues to this dinner discussion and RSVP if they want dinner.

  • What is social media? How is it defined?
  • Who are the top players in the social media space?
  • How is social media being used currently? What are some popular tools and features?
  • What are some case study examples of novel social marketing strategies and features on sites like facebook?
  • What is folksonomy and tag clouds? How are they being used to categorize and search for relevant content, build community, understand our own peer groups’ preferences, and perhaps gain market intelligence?
  • What are some examples demonstrating how social media networking and marketing may evolve in the future? What are some emerging new trends?
  • How do you know which social media site to commit to building a personal or group presence when there always seems to be a new popular one every few years?

About our WAAM Guest Experts:
Bryan Person — a community organizer and social media evangelist. He is the founder of the monthly Social Media Breakfast series, a networking event where marketers, PR pros, entrepreneurs, and online social networkers come together to eat, meet, share, and learn about social media. Bryan also advises companies on the latest and greatest online communication tools. He blogs at BryanPerson.com.

Deborah Block-Schwenk — a social media enthusiast who assists companies and organizations in getting their voice heard. Currently, Deborah is working as a consultant content blogger and online PR representative for "The Catalyst Code" blog (and its parent company "Market Platform Dynamics"), as well as online community manager and social media outreach coordinator for "Living Conversations", a site where breast cancers survivors can find support and tell their stories. She has an M.A. in Media Studies from the New School, along with a certificate in Media Management.
