The following is a case study of a WAAM collaborative web project to help fundraise
for leukemia treatment and research. The case study below details the general
methodology that WAAM uses in executing a project. It also provides a
general sense of the skill-set of various WAAM individuals if you should choose
to contact for potential project opportunities.
The Situation:
Wellesley College alumnae Sissi Liu '99 and
Katherine Hallissy '00 are training to run the San Diego Rock
n' Roll marathon in June - a fundraising event organized by the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society. In order to be eligible to compete in the contest, Katherine and Sissi must each
raise $3,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Project visionary Sissi turned to her fellow WAAMers to
help develop a website to facilitate fundraising efforts, and to keep patrons updated
on Sissi and Katherine's training
progress.

The Project Team:
Sissi Liu (Wellesley '99) - Project Manager and Visionary,
Content Co-Author
Katherine Hallissy (Wellesley '00) - Content Co-Author
Janet Si-Ming Lee (Wellesley '98) - Designer, Creative Lead
Leah Krauss (Wellesley '00) - HTML Page Developer
Alex Chou (Harvard '97) - Technical Lead, Web Developer
The WAAM Solution:
The WAAM project team met with Project Visionary Sissi to generate a
project schedule and define a website brand strategy.
-
WAAM project team derived the site's content navigation.
-
Project Creative Lead
Janet Si-Ming Lee developed a creative metaphor and strategy for the site.
To reinforce the link between Sissi and
Katherine's training efforts to a leukemia patient's fight for life, Janet decided to highlight
comments written by an actual 9-year-old leukemia patient throughout the website. By
personalizing the site with the boy's statements, Janet believed that the website visitor would be
able to identify with his fight against leukemia.
-
Janet then designed a prototype for the homepage and secondary
pages using Adobe Photoshop.
-
Once Sissi approved of the two designs, Janet
developed a HTML page template for the homepage and secondary pages, and
produced and optimized the associated graphics.
-
Using the design templates that Janet created as a design
guideline for the secondary page site development, HTML Page Developer Leah coded
the rest of the HTML pages in Dreamweaver (an advanced WYSYWYG, HTML page editor).
Leah also integrated the content written by Sissi and Katherine into the website
secondary content pages.
Phase I version of the TNT-sk website launched mid February 2001.
Phase II: Alex Chou, the technical lead on this
project, worked to create an online raffle/ballot system for potential
patrons to buy online tickets and win prizes.
