Project Requirements for Taiwanese Cultural Organization (TCO) Website

ABOUT THE CLIENT

Our client is Grace Yeh '07, the co-president of Wellesley College's Taiwanese Cultural Organization (TCO). The web site will reside on the Wellesley College server under Student Organizations. It will be maintained by Stella del Rosario '07, the publicity chair of TCO. After the 2006-7 school year, the site will be maintained by the future publicity chair(s) of TCO.

PURPOSE/GOALS AND INTENDED AUDIENCE

The main purpose of this project is to provide a more comprehensive, up-to-date, and professional web site that replaces their existing site, which has not been touched since 2003. This means the new TCO site should strive to keep non-eboard members updated on current club information, as well as inform non-Wellesley students of any open club events such as dances, parties, food festivals, and craft nights. The site should also provide general background information for those who have interest in Taiwanese culture. In doing so, TCO hopes to recruit more Wellesley students to become members of the organization. The site is therefore targeting Wellesley College students of all backgrounds, prospective Wellesley students looking for cultural organizations on campus, and members of other Taiwanese cultural student clubs, especially those in the Boston area. The fact that there is a wide range of audience members (and not just an 18 to 22 year-old Wellesley College Taiwanese student) means there should be a pleasing web site design for cross-platforms, all browsers, and all screen resolutions.

To accomplish these goals, the web site should be updated regularly with club news and Taiwanese news under the assumption that the visitor has no knowledge of Mandarin Chinese. We have agreed with our client that it must have a clear and easy navigational system with all other pages accessible by two clicks or less from the reference page. The client has also specified the main font cannot be Comic MS Sans and the main color scheme cannot use the politically-sensitive colors in Taiwan (green, blue, red, yellow). After all, the TCO is a non-partisan cultural organization that welcomes the membership of all Wellesley College students regardless of political affiliation and ethnic background.

CONTENT AND LAYOUT

The index page for the TCO website will include a welcome message, an announcement section, and links to the site's eight subpages: About TCO, About Taiwan, Eboard Members, Org Events, Intercollegiate Events, Pictures, Taiwanese News, and Links.

About TCO will give a general overview of the club. The page will start off with a history of TCO's presence at Wellesley, including information on when and why it changed its name from Taiwanese Student Association to Taiwanese Cultural Organization. It will then clearly state the club's current mission. At the bottom of this page, there will be a form where visitors can enter their email address so they can be informed about upcoming TCO events and happenings. Their email addresses will be routed to tcomail@wellesley.edu so TCO's eboard can add them to their spam list.

About Taiwan will introduce the republic to those who are not familiar with it. This page will be divided into subsequent sections, each separated with a header: brief history, geography, ethnic groups, language, and culture.

Eboard Members will introduce current members of TCO's executive board. Each member will have a picture to accompany her contact information. If TCO can get find out what their previous eboard members are doing now, we will add that information to this page.

Org Events will be a calendar listing of past and upcoming events hosted by TCO.

Intercollegiate Events will be a calendar listing of past and upcoming events hosted by other Taiwanese student organizations in the Boston area. This page will also give information on TCO's ties to Boston Intercollegiate Taiwanese Student Association (BITSA), Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Students Association (ITASA), etc.

Pictures will present high-quality digital pictures of previous TCO events, as opposed to the poorly scanned film pictures that are on TCO's current web site. They will be in thumbnail format to help alleviate the loading time.

Taiwanese News will be a blog of recent current event news in Taiwan. Because club news and events tend to be cyclical, this is our main way of ensuring the web site is regularly updated and visited. The blog will be adapted from Tim Cantin's guestbook CGI script. Members of TCO are expected to contribute headlines with links to outside new sources at least once a week. The link can direct the visitor to a Chinese-language news article, but the headline must be translated into English. Furthermore, the news does not have to be about politics or the economy. In fact, TCO members are encouraged to blog headlines related to Taiwanese culture (food reviews, entertainment news, sports news, and so forth).

Links will be divided into three sections, each separated with a header: links to other Asian student organizations at Wellesley, links to other colleges' Taiwanese student clubs, and links to sites that provide information about Taiwan, such as English newspapers and magazines in Taiwan.

In regards to design, each subpage will have a common layout and color scheme. There will be a sidebar on every subpage so that the visitor does not have to go back to the index page to access the other subpages. There will also be a TCO image at the top right-hand corner of each page which will also serve as a link back to the welcome page.
