Readings List

The following books are required or recommended for the course:

D8D: Director 8 Demystified - by Phil Gross (Required)
Good as both a guide and a reference book. We will be using Director MX in class (aka Director 9) but this book is enoough for what we will be covering. You will find a couple copies in classroom.

DMP: Digital Media Primer - by Yue-Ling Wong and Jennifer Burg (Required)
A great reference for digital media. Access through the web only.

McCW User-Centered Website Development by D.D. McCracken and R.J. Wolfe (Highly Recommended)
A very good book for those who want to know the basics of Human-Computer Interaction. In the Science Library Reserves.

NDW: The Non-Designer's Web Book - by Robin Williams and John Tolett (Recommended)
A great reference for those of us who have no formal training in design. It should be in the bookstore under CS110. Either version 2 or 3 is fine.

Most of the readings below are on the e-Reserves folder inside the class conference:

Kim-I: Inversions - by Scott Kim (Recommended, but out of print). We will study the chapter on Letterforms (pp.92-97)

Kim-P: Puzzle Workout - by Scott Kim (Recommended as well, but out of print as well).

HCSDG: Hypercard Stack Design Guidelines.
This book, written for designing Hypercard projects (known as 'stacks'), has excellent chapters on designing multimedia projects using any tool. In the Science Library Reserves. We will study chapters 2 and 9.

TDF&C: Typographic Design: Form and Communication by Bob Carter, Ben Ray and Philip Meggs. Excellent coverage of typographical information.

  • Chapter 2: The Anatomy of Typography
  • Chapter 4: Legibility

HCID: The Art of Human-Computer Interface Design - ed. by Brenda Laurel

Most of the book contains many interesting essays by people in the field with very different points of view...very much worth perusing. We will study the following:
  • Page 31-44: "Interdisciplinary Cooperation", by Scott Kim (amusing discussion of topic)
  • Page 65: "Working with Interface Metaphors", by Thomas D.Erickson
  • Page 79-84: "Prototyping: A Day in the Life of an Interface Designer", by Annette Wagner

Other books and articles we will use include:

AG4L: Advance Lingo for Games by Gary Rosenszweig.
Good insights in the world of games.

FC2C: Games Development: From Concepts to Creation by Epic Software, Kris Jampsa.
Good examples of games.

SK Don't make me think! a common sense approach to web usability, by Steve Krug. In the Science Library Reserves.

There are many multimedia CD-ROMs available - too many to list here. Feel free to browse them in E125. Also in the Science Library Reserves a must-see: The Matrix / The Matrix Revisited (DVDs).
