The exam will be open book/open notes, and will cover the material presented in class through Friday, November 10. In particular, the following material will be covered:

Natural Language Understanding: syntactic and semantic processing, covered in the following material from the "Natural Language Understanding" book by James Allen: pp. 41-65 (Grammars and Parsing), 227-238 and 244-250 (Semantics and Logical Form)

Common Sense Reasoning: thematic roles, CYC system, Open Mind project, covered in the following material: Winston text, Ch. 10, "Frames and Commonsense," pp. 209-221, http://www.cyc.com/cyc/, "The Open Mind Common Sense Project" by Push Singh

Learning: learning by building decision trees and constructing neural networks, covered in the following material: Winston text, Ch. 21, "Learning by Building Identification Trees," pp. 423-437, and Ch. 22, "Learning by Training Neural Nets," pp. 443-453, 457-468, and "Efficient Training of Artificial Neural Networks for Autonomous Navigation," by Dean Pomerleau

Assignments 5, 6 and 7 (including Labs 6-10)

You should review all of the material covered in the lectures on natural language, common sense reasoning, decision trees and neural nets. You may also want to review the Common LISP that we have covered in the course, as there will be a couple programming problems on the exam.

We will have a review of the exam material during the lab classes on November 15 and 16, so please try to look through the material in advance so that you can ask questions during lab.
