P1: Conceptual Design
(presentation due Tue October 18th at class,
revised design artifacts are due Fri October 21 before class)

The goal of this project milestone is to present and refine the conceptual design of your TUI. Each team will present in class the following design artifacts:

1) Use Scenario:
Create a narrative description of the interaction between a user (or users) and the proposed system. Your scenario should address the following aspects (see the example posted in the course conference):

Who, describe the chracteristics of a typical user/users. Focus on the chracteristics that may affect the user interface such as age, computer skills, occupation etc.

What, describe the tasks that a user can accomplish using the system.

How, describe the actions performed by the user in order to accomplish these tasks. Describe the system's responses to users' actions.

Where, describe the environment in which the interaction takes place.

Why, describe the benefits a user will gain from using the system.

2) Visual design:

Create a set of sketches that illustrate the design of your system. Your sketches should range in granularity. For example, one sketch can describe where an interactive surface is located in a lobby and the shape of the physical interaction objects it employs, other sketches may illustrate the design of the visual feedback provided by the interactive surface. Your team should provide sketches that illustrate in detail all the visual and tangible aspects of your interface.

3) Storyboard:

Create a storyboard that describes the dynamic behavior of the system. The storyboard should combine words with sketches showing how the interface would look or respond at important points in the scenario (see storyboarding-truong paper on e-reserve for guidelines).

4) Low-fidelity prototype:

A low-fidelity prototype is a sketchy and incomplete prototype of an interface that has some characteristics of the target interface but is otherwise simple. It is used to quickly produce a prototype and test design concepts. For your presentation create a kit of parts made of simple materials such as clay, paper, wood, fabric etc. that represent the different interaction objects employed by the proposed TUI. The kit should be detailed enough so that you can rapidly lead someone through an interaction. For your presentation, select one (or more) of your team members to demonstrate the use of the interface using the low-fidelity prototype. Write down the tasks that this team member is about to demonstrate. Try and present at least three different tasks.

In addition to presenting your conceptual design and design artifacts in class. Following the presentation, you should submit copies or digital photos of each artifact with accompanying explanations. Your submission should reflect updates you will apply to your design artifacts following the comments and ideas you will recieve from other teams during the presentation.Submit your work by uploading a folder with your presentation and design artifacts to Google Docs and share it with the course Google group.

Also, write a post in your blog that summerizes your conceptual design and explains your design rationale (i.e. why you made particular design decisions).
