Digital Threats to the Film Industry
We are conducting a semester-long project to investigate the impact of the
internet on the film industry, particularly with regard to the prevalence of
Netflix, and digital piracy. We want to investigate how people choose to
access movies, and how that has changed over time. DVD rental systems have
already been rendered obsolete. Does the same fate await movie theaters?
Survey Questions
- Survey question based on
The Emotional and Health Implications of Binge Watching Streaming TV
: When you watch Netflix, are you usually: alone, or with others? Shared by Roxie Miles
on social media. Responses: 122 as of 10/17/19. The majority of survey responses came
from teenagers, currently attending high school or college. 88% reported that they
usually watch Netflix alone, whereas 11% preferred to watch with friends.
- Survey Question based on
Investigating the Effect of Screen Size on Viewer Immersion : Do you prefer
to watch movies at home, or at a theater? This question is broad enough
to encompass both the findings of the article, that larger screens afford greater
emersion for viewers, and the comfort of an at-home experience. To be shared by
Roxie Miles on Social Media. Responses: Not yet shared, so 0 as of 10/17/19.

Factors That Influence Software Piracy
- Survey Question based on Piracy is on the Rise : If you’re pirating
a movie or tv series, are you usually: alone, or with others? Shared by Roxie Miles
on social media. Responses: 90 as of 10/17/19. The majority of survey responses came
from teenagers, currently attending high school or college. 58% reported that they
usually watch alone, whereas 42% preferred to watch with friends. Given the responses
to the question regarding whether people usually watch Netflix alone,
it's likely that people generally tend to watch movies or tv
alone. Furthermore, the results indicate that when people are pirating movies, they're
more likely to be in group settings than if they were watching Netflix. I hypothesize
that this is due to a sense of collective accountability, that alivates the sense of
guilt some individuals might feel if they were engaging in an illegal act alone.
- Survey Question based on Does Digital Piracy Really Hurt Movies?
: How often do you buy or rent a movie online, instead of finding it for free
on other sites: over 50% of the time, or less than 50% of the time? Shared by Roxie Miles
on social media. Responses: 106 as of 10/17/19. The majority of survey responses came
from teenagers, currently attending high school or college. 69% reported that they
usually watch movies for free via illegal methods, whereas 31% preferred to pay to
stream movies legally.

- Survey Question based on With Interactive TV, Every Viewer is a Showrunner
: When you're looking for something new to watch, what do you rely more heavily on
friends' suggestions, or the site's algorithm? Shared by Roxie Miles
on social media. Responses: 64 as of 10/17/19. The majority of survey responses came
from teenagers, currently attending high school or college. 64% reported that they
usually pick movies based on friends' recommendations, whereas 32% made choices based
on the site's suggestions. Significantly, this indicates that, although most people
indicated in previous survey questions that they prefer watching Netflix and pirating
content alone, it can still be a social experience, that could potentially spark
conversation later on.
- Survey Question based on What the Takedown of Two Streaming Services Means for Piracy
: If you pirate movies/tv, have you ever had negative consequences, like a
computer virus? (Yes/No). This question will address the experienced risk of
pirating content, and the prevalence of consquences for those that do chose to
engage with digital piracy. To be shared by Roxie Miles on Social Media.

Survey Format
Roxie's survey questions were asked individually, and shared via social media, where she believed
people could chose to answer the questions that they were comfortable responding to. For every
question in which responses could be considered self-incriminating (ie, instances where people
discussed their experiences pirating content), it was made clear that the survey was for a
Computer Science class. Below are two examples of the presentation of the survey questions.
