Q. What kinds of bottles and cans can I recycle?

A. ALL kinds! Redeemable and non-redeemable. Plastic and glass bottles/jars (clear, green, or brown); aluminum, tin, and steel cans (with lids); milk jugs, juice bottles, etc.

Q. Should I DRAIN my bottles and cans before I put them in the bins?

A. Yes. Despite the fact that you may never see this can again, please be considerate of your recycling reps.

Q. What kinds of plastic can I recycle?

A. ALL kinds! Check the bottom of the container to see the number. Plastic containers labeled 1-7 are all recyclable. This includes yogurt containers, shampoo bottles, etc. (Plastic bags are also recyclable).

Q. What kinds of paper products can I recycle?

A. Most kinds. In January, 2006, Wellesley College expanded the mix of paper it recycles. For more information, see expanded mix paper (HTML) or expanded mix paper (PDF). The PDF version is suitable for printing and posting on paper recycling bins.

Q. What else can I recycle?

A. Aluminum foil & trays; all types of batteries; furniture, clean clothes, books, household items, electronics (i.e., CD's, DVD's, tapes, videocassettes, TV's, computers, etc.)

Q. Can I recycle my used inkjet printer cartridges?

A. Yes! The United States Postal Service (USPS) has mailing envelopes to send smaller ink cartridges free of charge to be recycled or properly disposed of. Your dorm recycling representative may have some of these on hand, so ask. Hewlett-Packard (HP) recycles used cartridges, and they pay for shipping and everything. You can find out about their "ereturns" program.

A. Of course! Just put them along with the plastic bottles, and your recycling rep will take care of it.

A. Here's the site: Wellesley Town RDF

Q. What gets recycled in the dorms?

A. Cans, bottles, newspaper (does not need to be separated from used office paper), office paper, manila envelopes, cardboard, batteries (at bells desk).

A. You can always turn off the lights when you're not in the dorm. Of course, you can also turn off the computer while you're sleeping. Conserve energy as you see fit.

Dining Hall Waste

Q. What's being done about reducing paper use in the dining halls?

A. As of this writing, all dining halls except Schneider and Pomeroy will be paper-free. The college has distributed free multiple-use plastic mugs to students for beverages, soups, cereal or other things.

Paper Purchasing

Q. Can academic departments buy recycled paper?

A. Yes! Academic departments currently have the option of purchasing non-recycled, 35% recycled or 100% PCW recycled paper.

Leaky Faucets

Q. What should I do when I see a leaky faucet?

A. The procedure for fixing anything broken in the dorm, including leaks, is just to write it in the log book at the bells desk. In fact, even academic buildings have log books! Just ask one of the administrative assistants if you don't know where they are. If something hasn't been fixed for a long time or requires immediate attention, call x2767 during business hours and you will get the maintenance dispatcher and they fill out a work order. During non-business hours, if an pressing problem arises (like pipes bursting), call Campus Police at x2121.
