Project Requirements:
Academic Decathlon Website
Our Client
Our client is the Academic Decathlon team at James Monroe High School in
North Hills, California. The Academic Decathlon team at Monroe High School
is an extracurricular club that prepares students to partake in a
ten-event scholastic competition. Decathletes at Monroe dedicate a lot of
their time to learn about the year's theme, as well as develop a strong
relationship with their fellow teammates and coach. Gloria will be our
contact person with the team coach since she is an alumna of the
high school and a past member of the team.
Website Purpose and Goals
The purpose of this website is to create awareness of the Academic
Decathlon team for potential members, as well as to solicit financial
support for the program. The overall goal is to inform viewers about the
team so as to encourage current high school students to consider joining,
expose parents who might not be familiar with this extracurricular activity,
and inspire people who might be interested in helping the team by
donating.
Audience
The audience of our website is potential students, parents,
and donors.
- Potential students: The site will be targeted at James Monroe High
School students, especially freshman and sophomores. High school students
tend to be tech-savvy.
- Potential parents: The site needs to be accessible to parents of
potential students, many of whom might want more information about how
their students are spending their time outside of class. They will also receive
most of the relevant information in the first few pages. They might be
more interested in the page that includes a profile of past members and
where they are now to see how the program has benefitted them. Also,
they might be more interested in the page about the staff involved with
Acadeca so they know who they can contact if they have any questions.
Parents from this communiy might not be as tech-savvy as their children.
- Potential donors: The site's third target audience are people, be
it community members or past students, who want to donate to the team
to help them pay for the team's expenses (such as afterschool snacks).
The website intends to motivate potential donors with a profile
of current students involved with the program.
Website Content and Organization
The website will include the following information:
- How the scholastic competition works, as well outlining the ten
events in which students compete
- Information about the school's Academic Decathlon team
- Information on the current school year's Academic Decathlon team,
including a profile of current members on the team, the year's theme
and awards given to the team
- Information on past members of the team, as well as what they are
currently doing
- Information for donors or potential donors on why the team needs
to fundraise, how the team uses donations, and who they can contact if
they wish to donate
- Quizzes and sample questions on Academic Decathlon tests to give
potential members an idea of what the quizzes are like
- Information about the Academic Decathlon team's staff
Website's Final Location
The coach of the team, Ximena Miller, is aware that she will have to find
a place to host the website at the end of the semester.
