This marks the time Wellesley Cred Lab was formally founded. Prof. Mustafaraj, Emma Lurie ’19, and Khonzoda Umarova ’20 started two research projects: (1) auditing search engine result pages (SERP) by building their own SERP observatory (2) identifying credibility signals that can help categorize websites of questionable origin or content. They submitted a proposal for an NSF CAREER grant, which was eventually accepted and funded.

The NSF CAREER grant officially started in September (to coincide with Prof. Mustafaraj sabbatical). The team consisted of returning students and new students: Emma Lurie ‘19, Khonzoda Umarova ‘20, Annabel Rothschild ‘20, Yige Zhu ‘21, and Anna Kawakami ‘21 (a SERP fellow for this year). Joined by: Mileva Van Tuyl ‘21 (also a SERP fellow), Beatriz Paulino-Ozuna ’22, Ashley Yang ’22, Sarai Hertz-Velasquez ’22, Claire Devine ’22, Michaella Henry ’21, Denise Han ’21, and Elaney Cheng ‘22. Dongchen (Jennifer) Huang ‘19, Yige Zhu ‘21, and Jun Ru Andersoon ‘21 joined Prof. Mustafaraj for the summer program. The team designed and conducted a user study about the appearance of real and fake news websites that led to the HT ‘19 paper.

They worked on the following projects: (1) fact-check characterizations (2) a web literacy website (3) the Russian interference in the 2016 elections (4) Prof. Mustafaraj, Emma Lurie ‘19 and Claire Devine ‘22 co-authored a FAT* ‘20 paper.

Three Wellesley students, Junita Sirait ‘22, Mackenzie Weatherly ‘22, and Jessi Kim ‘23, as well as a high school student, Sophia Piper ’21 from Marblehead High School worked in summer lab. (1) Sirait worked on building an interactive website for the Top stories election data (2) Kim worked in building the two websites, including this exact one you are currently on. (3) Weatherly worked on following and reporting on misinformation news (4) Piper worked on analyzing Twitter data.
