Applications of Face Recognition: Benefits and Issues for their Deployment

This part of the assignment should be an individual effort - it is ok to have a high-level discussion with a classmate, but you should compose the write-up on your own.

In this part of Assignment 4, you will write an essay that describes important applications of face recognition technologies and their benefits, as well as some of the critical issues that arise in the depolyment of these technologies, such as legal and ethical issues, security and privacy concerns, the need for reliability in performance, and user trust in their outcome. Face recognition systems can be beneficial to society, but researchers, technologists, policy makers, and others, need to ensure that this technology will be used in a way that addresses legal, security, privacy, and reliability concerns, among other issues. In preparation for a class discussion on Tuesday, November 16, write a summary of what you view as key benefits (i.e. useful applications) and drawbacks of face recognition technologies, and the key issues for society that must be considered. The summary should be at least 1000 words long, concisely written. Below are links to a few recent online articles addressing some of these questions, just to give you a taste of the area. You are welcome to explore additional articles beyond what is provided below — these are just a few examples. You should cite any additional sources that you draw insights from. Your essay should consider a range of application areas and issues for the successful deployment of this technology, and not just focus on a particular application or issue.
