About the training materials

We recognize that our tutors can be hugely impactful. These modules are adapted from the work of the Mount Holyoke College Computer Science Department and Dr. Becky Wai-Ling Packard. They are part of the AIICE (Alliance for Identity Inclusive Computing Education) Professional Development for Computer Science tutors course.

The skills explored in this course are not just relevant to you as a tutor. They are also key skills for:

  • communicating effectively with supervisors
  • working effectively on a team
  • taking on management or leadership positions

Frequently
Asked
Questions

Who participates in this tutor training?

All Computer Science tutors who directly interact with students (hold drop-ins, one-on-one sessions, lab, etc) are required to participate in tutor training.

Are tutors compensated for the training?

Yes, for the 2024-2025 academic year, we are fortunate to have a grant to pay tutors for completing the tutor training modules and participating in the discussion and debriefing. Tutors will learn about the compensation process during the in-person meeting(s).

Is tutor training mandatory for all student-facing CS tutors?

Yes. The CS department requires ALL CS tutors to complete the training, which includes both the online modules and the in-person discussions (the anticipated total time for tutor training is 2.5 hours per semester). All tutors are required to attend the in-person training workshops. Tutors who do not complete the training are ineligible to tutor in subsequent semesters in the CS department.

I am a returning tutor (I tutored last year) -- do I have to redo the online modules?
No, you do not have to do the modules again, but you are welcome to do so as a refresher. It is our goal that CS tutors are as inclusive as possible at all times.

I am a returning tutor (I tutored last year) -- must I attend the in-person workshops?
Yes, these workshops are considered part of your job responsibility as a CS tutor, therefore, you are expected to attend the workshops. As noted above, tutors who do not complete the training (the in-person sessions are part of the training) are ineligible to tutor in subsequent semesters in the CS department.

How can I complete the training?
  • complete the three training modules (Mindset, Emotional Intelligence, and Effective Feedback in the Fall and Identity, and Belonging in the Spring)
  • submit completion report(s) to Sarah Block (sb129)
  • attend the in-person meeting (Fall Thursday, 9/18/25; Spring, TBD) and engage respectfully and mindfully with all activities
Who should I contact if I have a question?

For questions about tutor training, contact Sarah Block, (sb129), CS Academic Administrator/Grants Coordinator.

I finished a training module, how do I fill out the Topic Completion Report?

You can use the image below as a guide:

  • Your identifying information is your Wellesley email address (for example, if your name is Wonderful Tutor, then your Wellesley email might be wt999@wellesley.edu). Use your own Wellesley email here.
  • The report destination email is sb129@wellesley.edu.
This is important, because this is how we track who has completed the modules. Sarah Block, CS Administrative Assistant/Grants Coordinator, will get the emails signaling that you completed each module. Please enter sb129@wellesley.edu correctly for the report destination email.

Image of google form with title 'Topic Completion Report' and two form fields are singled out. The first is 'Your Identifying Information', and an arrow indicates that you should fill in your own Wellesley gmail address there, eg, wt999. The second form field is the Report Destination Email, and this should always to go sb129@wellesley.edu, our CS administration assistant, Sarah Block.
