This is Charlotte, the robotic spider. She is a product of Robotic Design Studio, a Computer Science and Physics class at Wellesley College.

 

So...what does Charlotte do?

Charlotte is programmed to spin a web by dragging a pen behind her as she traces out the pattern of a web onto a pre-drawn set of axes. She can also peruse her web, hungrily searching for bugs.

What is Charlotte made of?

She is a combination of LEGOs and a mini-computer, known as the Handy Board. The Handy Board is also known as a "programmable brick," and was designed by a team at the MIT Media Lab. She also uses various sensors to "analyze" her environment. Her legs are silver pipe cleaners and her "hair" consists of torn pom-poms. Finally, Charlotte is a victim of obsessive "hot-gluing," performed by her creators. For further design information, visit The Miracle Page.
