The Metaxa Family Tree

Combined genealogy — Venezia "Libro d'Oro", the Malta (maltagenealogy.com) family record, and Sturdza's Grandes Familles de Grece, d'Albanie et de Constantinople
How this was built: This tree started as a merge of two independent sources: the Venezia "Libro d'Oro" historical & genealogical notice for the Metaxa family of Cephalonia, and the Malta genealogy published at maltagenealogy.com/metaxa (see the two-source version of this tree for that merge in detail). This version adds a third, independent source: M.D. Sturdza's Grandes Familles de Grece, d'Albanie et de Constantinople — Dictionnaire Historique, Metaxa entry, made up of two parts — a printed genealogical tree (pp.346-349) covering the family from Marcantonio Metaxa down through several named branches (Anzolato, Anastasato, Zenzerato, Liseo, Calochiridi, Epitropato, and others), and the accompanying dictionary-entry prose that goes with it.

Sturdza's tree covers a subset of what the combined Venezia/Malta tree already has — every one of the roughly 165 people it shows could be matched to an existing entry (by name, generation, and approximate date); none were unique to Sturdza once correctly placed. That confirmation is layered onto the matching entry as a third info block, shown with a badge and a rose-colored underline on the name. Sturdza's accompanying narrative text (the prose entry, as opposed to the tree diagram) is a different kind of source — a condensed family history rather than a person-by-person chart — and is layered on separately, labeled "Sturdza narrative," on the handful of entries it speaks to directly (the family's founding migration, two archbishops, the 1691 comital grant, the Cephalonia-Santorini "Doro" branch, and General Ioannis Metaxas).

Where Sturdza (tree or narrative) and the existing record differ even slightly — a spelling, a date, which branch a person is filed under, or an outright conflicting claim — that is called out as a note rather than silently resolved in favor of one source. The tree is a skewed photograph of a printed page and not always easy to read; a handful of entries are marked "reading uncertain" and are worth checking against the original if load-bearing.

This tree also carries two markers from the underlying Venezia source: underlined names mark the head of a named branch (per the Libro d'Oro), and italicized names mark the direct ancestral line from Marco-Antonio Metaxa (1) to Count Gerasimo (461) — Panayiotis Takis Metaxas's own direct lineage.

[1] MARCO-ANTONIO (b. 1430) Malta: Marcantonio branch: Marcantonio
Sturdza: Was in Constantinople in 1453, settled in Cephalonia.
Sturdza narrative: The accompanying Sturdza narrative names and places the two brothers this entry already mentions (Sergio and Nicolo): Sergios, the eldest, is said to have settled in Corfu, where he was inscribed in that island's Golden Book of nobility in 1503, his line dying out in 1750; Nikolaos settled in Lefkada, where descendants reportedly still existed as of Sturdza's writing -- though the narrative also notes an alternate account that this branch did not reach Lefkada from Cephalonia until the late 17th century. Neither the tree nor the existing Venezia/Malta record traces either brother's line by name, so this is included as background rather than linked to specific descendants.
Venezia: MARCO-ANTONIO METAXA, born perhaps around 1430, noble and Senator of Byzantium, took refuge in Cephalonia in 1453, after the capture of Constantinople by the Turks. He settled in the village of Franzata, which was from then on called Metaxata, a name it still bears today (Cephalonian Parnassus, p. 404 — History of the House of Metaxa, p. 24). With his two brothers, Sergio and Nicolò Metaxa, he had first taken refuge on the island of Chios and from there in Cydonia, in Crete, whence he made his way to the island of Cephalonia.

Sturdza: b. c.1545, Metaxata — Archbishop of Cephalonia and Zante, 1591-1600.
Merge note: Same person: Malta gives a short entry, Venezia gives an extensively sourced biography.
Venezia: DON NICODEMO I METAXA, Archbishop of Cephalonia and Zante from 1591 to 1600, born in Metaxata around 1545. According to Loverdo (History of Cephalonia, p. 159), he would have become Archbishop in 1587 and died in 1599. However, all the authorities (Masarachi, p. 522 — N. Karvounis [?], p. 76 — History of the House of Metaxa — Life of Musachi, p. 356 — Chiotis, Historical Records — S. Theotoki, Recollections, Vol. I, p. 31) affirm that he was elected in 1591 and occupied the see for ten years, until 1600 or 1601. He was a friend of the Patriarch of Constantinople Cyril Lucaris, who detached the islands of Cephalonia and Zante from the diocese of Corinth and made them an independent see (Masarachi, p. 522). On his death, he bequeathed his entire fortune by will to the Episcopal See (History of the House of Metaxa).

[41] ANGELO

[42] DON NICODEMO II (b. 1585 – d. 1646) Malta: Nicolmedio
Sturdza: b. Keramies 1585, d. 29 March 1646 — Archbishop of Cephalonia and Zante, 1628-1632. Exarch of San Giorgio dei Greci (Venice) and Archbishop of Philadelphia.
Sturdza narrative: The accompanying Sturdza narrative adds two details not in the tree or the existing Venezia record: it connects his printing-press affair to Patriarch Cyril Lucaris of Constantinople, whose own contacts with Transylvanian Calvinists and Dutch/English diplomats had drawn Jesuit hostility, and it credits him with the first Greek printing press established in Constantinople. It also describes a coat of arms made for him once he settled in Venice as a Venetian subject -- a Catholic-style bishop's blazon unusual for an Orthodox prelate: the Metaxa dove surmounted by a bishop's hat and cross, with six tassels (Orthodox heraldry did not otherwise exist, and fifteen tassels were reserved for cardinals).
Venezia: DON NICODEMO II, Archbishop of Cephalonia and Zante from 1628 to 1640, born in Keramiès in 1585, died 29 March 1646. He became a monk around 1620 and went to London, where he bought a printing press, which he brought to Cephalonia, where he began publishing books. The historian Mavrojanni (Vol. A, p. 261, note 1) believes that Nicodemo made no use of his press in Cephalonia. In 1627 he transferred it to Constantinople and put it at the service of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Arrested by the Turkish authorities, he was exiled on 6 January 1628, but was set free toward the end of June of the same year. The English Ambassador in Constantinople at that time, Sir Thomas Roe, reports at length to his Government the protection he felt bound to extend to Nicodemo Metaxa, and how the latter found refuge in the Embassy of Great Britain when the Janissaries destroyed his printing press, at the instigation of the Jesuits, who were backed by the French Embassy (Negotiations etc. in his Embassy to the Ottoman Court from 1621 to 1628). In reward for his services, the Patriarchate appointed him Bishop of Nauplia, but on 6 July 1628, he obtained to be sent instead as Archbishop to Cephalonia and Zante. On 12 April 1632 the Greek Community of Venice offered him the post of parish priest of the Church of San Giorgio in Venice, with the title, attached to that post, of Archbishop of Philadelphia and Exarch of the Church. He did in fact live there for some years, but in 1635 he resigned and returned to Cephalonia, where he resumed direction of the diocese, which he retained until his death. He wrote several religious works (Tsitseli, Cephalonian Symmikta — Life of Musachi, p. 356 — History of the House of Metaxa, p. 32 — S. M. Theotoki, Recollections, Vol. I, p. 31).

In 1684 he was appointed "Sopracomito di Galera" [Galley Captain] and took part in the campaign of the Captain-General Francesco Morosini to free the island of Lefkada from the Ottoman yoke (Cicelli, p. 267; Frotos [?], 1684 — History of the House of Metaxa, pp. 49, 52 — Loverdo VII). Sturdza: b. c.1610 — Colonel of stradiotes; Governor of Ithaca 1659, 1670; Sindaco of Cephalonia.
Venezia: GIOVANNI-BATTISTA, born around 1610, Colonel of the Venetian Army, distinguished himself in the wars of Crete in 1657, where he commanded a corps of 250 Cephalonians, raised and armed at his own expense, as well as at Lemnos. The Venetian Generals Antonio Barbaro and Francesco Morosini granted him certificates of bravery and good service (Cicelli, p. 407). The historical accounts of this Giovanni-Battista are largely confused with those of another Giovanni-Battista (54), son of Zanni (43) — see Cicelli, pp. 407, 429. However, the History of the Metaxa Family clearly separates them and adds that the one concerning us here was Governor of Ithaca in 1659 and 1670, and "Syndic" in 1683, 1692, and 1699 (History of the House of Metaxa, p. 70; see also Life of Musachi, p. 354; Chiotis, Historical Records; Historical Repository of Contemporaries, Paris 1861).

Venezia: ZORZI, born around 1790, married perhaps to an Englishwoman, since his son is called "son of the Englishwoman." Zorzi Metaxa roused the peasants of the District of Omala against the English in 1848 and himself took command of three hundred of them, with whom he held out against the Government troops at the Battle of the Bridge. Orders having been given for his arrest, he managed to escape to Greece. Tried in absentia, he was condemned to death on 30 October 1849. Not feeling safe in Greece, he went to Wallachia. In 1854, when the revolution of Thessaly against the Turks broke out, Zorzi Metaxa took part in the Epirus campaign, with the rank of Captain of the Cephalonian Legion, and showed great bravery, as attested by the certificates of General Tzavellas and others. After this war, Zorzi Metaxa had himself naturalized as a Greek citizen and was appointed, in 1861, Consul of Greece at Craiova (Romania). In 1863 he resigned and returned to Argostoli, by then part of the Kingdom of Greece, and lived there until his death, 28 September 1864 (Cicelli, pp. 425–426).

Family note: Note: this entry’s short label previously read "(b. 1912 – d. 1915)," but Venezia’s own prose never actually states Aristide’s own birth year — the "1912" belonged to his grandson (born about 1912, see [469-2-1-1]), mentioned later in the same paragraph, and was mistakenly attached to this label. Birth year 1857 is from the Malta source, and fits the rest of the entry (a son married by 1910).

Sturdza: b. Caravadi (Cephalonia) 1813, d. Marseille 14 Sept 1899 — Doctor of medicine; municipal councillor at Marseille; of Drepano.
Family note: Birth year per the Malta source and family record (1813); Venezia's own biographical text gives 1823, which appears to be the less accurate figure.
Venezia: Dr. STAVRO, the eminent ophthalmologist of Marseille, born at Karavados, in the countryside of Cephalonia, in 1823, died without issue at Marseille 14 September 1899. He had studied Medicine at the University of Athens, but when the 1848 revolution against English rule broke out in Cephalonia, he went there at once and took an active part in these events, and on 14 September marched against the town of Lixouri at the head of the peasants of the Province of Paliki. The English Government having succeeded in suppressing the movement, Stavro Metaxa fled with his brothers to the Kingdom of Greece. Not feeling safe there, he left under a false name on 8 July 1849 for France, where he completed his studies in Medicine and especially in Ophthalmology, in which he was perhaps the most eminent practitioner of his time. He was the author of several scientific works and a member of numerous learned societies. In 1870 he offered his services free of charge to the French Army in the war against Germany. Léon Gambetta, who honored him with his friendship, awarded him the Cross of Officer of the Legion of Honor and had him naturalized French. In 1885 he was elected Municipal Councillor of Marseille and was the principal instigator of the building of the Hôpital de la Charité, of which he was named the first President, a post he held until 1888. He died at Sainte-Marcelle on 14 September 1899 and was buried at Drapano in Cephalonia (Cicelli, pp. 412–448 — Life of Musachi, p. 353 — History of the House of Metaxa, p. 231 — Chiotis, Historical Records).

Venezia: Dr. EUSTACCHIO, born around 1760, married firstly, 7 December 1784, to ORSA (248), daughter of Antonio FOCA PAVLATO (158), secondly, around 1810, to ANNA (277), daughter of Gerasimo METAXA LASCARATO-JANNEI (182). He was Governor of Ithaca in 1786 (History of the House of Metaxa, p. 77). After the occupation of the Ionian Islands by the Russo-Turkish fleet, he was appointed by Admiral Ushakov, in November 1798, a member of the Provisional Government of Cephalonia. The historian Mavrojanni says (History of the Ionian Islands, Vol. A, p. 326): "Eustathios Metaxas was also elected a member of the Provisionary Council in the year 1800, under the Small Council [Mikron Symvoulion], having been convened by the Tzangarolas [family]." However, he could not keep these important duties for long, for a certain Stelio Vagliano, of the Commune of Keramiès, roused the peasants against Eust. Metaxa, and Loverdo tells us (Ch. X, year 1799): "The peasants, incited by certain others of the Metaxa family who hated him mortally, found as a pretext that the said Doctor Eustacchio Metaxa had purchased from the Venetian Government, for a modest sum, a property of the Convent of the Blessed Virgin of Pighi, which he incorporated into his estate in the district of Elios, building a mansion there. The mutinous peasants, numbering about two thousand, some armed and some unarmed, raised up the Sacred Image of the Virgin from the said Convent and carried it in procession to Argostoli. The Imperial Vicar, Count Corafan . . . ordered the few forces left by the Admirals to disperse the mutineers . . . who retreated to their villages, taking the Sacred Image with them. Wherever they passed on the road, they raised piles of stones in anathema of Metaxa, whose mansion, built in the district of Elios, they set on fire. Count Corafan . . . after having lifted the judicial charges against Metaxa, sent his resignation to Corfu, to the two Admirals and to the provisional Senate, which was accepted." On 12 August 1800 the peasants of Omala and Livathò rose up against the local Government and marched on Argostoli, where they opened the prison gates and pillaged and burned the houses of the two most influential members of the Presidency, Count Coïden and Eust. Metaxa, who managed to take refuge in Zante. In April 1801, Eustachio Metaxa returned to Cephalonia and, attaching himself to the Anino party, settled first in the village of Trojanata and then in that of Faraclata, from where, as the historian Mavrojanni tells us (History of the Ionian Islands, Vol. A, p. 331): "he set out from there advancing in a spirit of insurrection, through which he persuaded the peasants to rise up against Argostoli, so as to drive out the rebels and restore the lawful Government." Finally, the Central Government sent to Cephalonia the Counts Dessila and Capodistria, with a detachment of Russian troops, to install a local Government under the new Constitution. On 2 May 1801, Eustachio Metaxa was ordered to leave Cephalonia within 24 hours, on pain of death and confiscation of his entire fortune. But on the evening of 3 May, the young Count Giovanni Capodistria had a secret conversation with Metaxa, and the matter was not pursued further, and the sentence of exile against Eustachio Metaxa was revoked. In October 1802, Eust. Metaxa was appointed Governor of Cerigo by the Russian Plenipotentiary Count Mocenigo. He arrived there with a Russian garrison and distinguished himself by a severe but just administration, and by the regular payment of taxes, including arrears (Loverdo, Constitution, p. 209 — Cicelli, p. 426 — Mavrojanni, Vol. A, pp. 384, 388, Vol. B, p. 29). On the "List of the Sinclito" of 1843 his name appears as: "No. 394,

[168] Count NICOLÒ (b. 1770 – d. 1795)
Venezia: Count NICOLÒ, born around 1770, died without issue in 1795. This is probably the "N. Metaxa" who married MARIA (75), daughter of Dr. Nicolò LUSI (42). Some Family Trees of the Metaxa family attribute to this Count Nicolò (165 [168]) the four sons of his cousin, Count Nicolò (156 [159]), son of Count Spiro Metaxa (113 [115]). However, in 1795 Maria Metaxa, née Lusi, obtained a ruling from the Senate of Venice, dated 19 May 1795, by which a portion of the fiefs of the Metaxa family reverted to her, for lack of direct heirs of her late husband, who was probably this Count Nicolò Metaxa (265 [168]). From that time this fief passed to the Lusi family.
Malta: Count Nicolo Metaxa, (1770-1795), married to Maria Lusi.
[169] Count MARINO (b. 1777 – d. 1857)
Venezia: Count MARINO, born 1777, died at Argostoli 1857, without issue. He had studied Law at the University of Padua and had been elected Senator on 16 October 1803 under the Russian Protectorate, Deputy to the Ionian Parliament in 1806, and Senator for Cephalonia in the Ionian Senate, appointed by General Berthier in September 1807 (Mavrojanni, History of the Ionian Islands, Vol. B, p. 186). He was sent twice on special mission to the Emperor Napoleon I and was decorated by him with the Order of the Legion of Honor and of the Iron Crown. A man of letters and a poet. Member of the revolutionary society "Filiki [Eteria]," which he helped with generous financial gifts (Zois, Musachi, p. 385 — Cicelli, pp. 35–36 — Mavrojanni, Vol. A, p. 252, Vol. B, p. 186 — Chiotis, Historical Records, p. 832 — Loverdo, Constitution, ch. XIII, 1803 — History of the House of Metaxa, p. 104). These two brothers, and indeed the whole Metaxa-Anzolato family, made common cause with the aristocratic party, headed by the Metaxa-Anastasato, in its struggles — often bloody — against the peasant party, led by the Anino and Loverdo families. The historian Loverdo speaks of this in the following terms (Ch. X, year 1801): "The Metaxa-Anzolato family, more out of the spite they bore toward their kinsman Dr. Eustachio Metaxa, whom by persuasion they had won over, allied themselves with the Counts Metaxa and their party." Chiotis likewise says: "the party of the aristocrats was [led] by the Metaxa-Anzolato" [Greek text]. One of the Family Trees of the Metaxa family omits this Marino Metaxa (166 [169]), as well as his brother Nicolò (165 [168]), to whom, as we have said, other Family Trees of the same family attribute, however, four sons. There is evidently some confusion between the children or grandchildren of the two brothers, Count Giovanni (117 [119]) and Count Spiro (114 [115]), owing to the coincidence of the names and the political career of some of them, but we believe our version to be the more correct one.
Malta: Count Marino Metaxa, (1777-1857), Deputy Senator in the Greek government .
[120] Countess CATERINA (b. 1720) Malta: Countess Caterina
Venezia: Countess CATERINA, born around 1720, married 19 February 1758 to GERASIMO (277), son of Demetrio INGLESSI (129).

[92] Count ANASTASIO (b. 1650 – d. 1714) branch: Anastasato
Sturdza: b. c.1650, d. 1714 — Sapracomito of a galley, 1684. Created Count 12 July 1691. Married 20 September 1683 to Chiara Stadero. Head of the Metaxa-Anastasato and Metaxa-Zenzerato branches.
Sturdza narrative: The accompanying Sturdza narrative includes what reads as a translation of the formal 1691 grant document (from the Italian, via Tsitselli): Doge Francesco Morosini's decree elevating "Colonel Anastasio Metaxa" to Count, citing his having raised a levy at his own expense to defend Lefkada, his relief of Xeromero when invaded by Liberakis (leading 2,000 men gathered at his own expense to bring bread and munitions to the Provveditore Generale's army), and his leading 800 men to the siege of Vlore -- consistent with, and more detailed in the primary-source language than, the existing record's own account of this same 1691 grant.
Venezia: Count ANASTASIO, born around 1650, died 1714, married 20 September 1683 to CHIARA, daughter of Nicolò STADERO, whose dowry contract of the same date bears the heading, "Marriage contract of the Count Anastasio Metaxa Anastasato..." [Greek text]. He was "Sopracomito" of a Galley in 1684, with which he rendered important services to the Venetians in the war of the Levant (Chiotis, p. 126, year 1684). He took part, as Colonel of a Regiment of 3,000 Greek volunteers, in Morosini's expeditions to Lefkada, Vlorë, and Xiromero, and led a corps of 2,800 men against the renegade Prince of Mani, Liberachi Gerakaris, in the Morea. He was appointed Governor of Ithaca in 1684 and afterward Commander-General of Western Greece and Achaea (Loverdo, Constitution, pp. 147, 157 — History of the House of Metaxa, pp. 52, 54, 70 — Cephalonian Parnassus, p. 418 — Historical Repository of Contemporaries, Paris 1861). By Decree of 12 June 1691, the Venetian Senate granted him the title of Count and the fief of Meganisi, in reward for his services during the expeditions to Lefkada, Xiromero, and Vlorë (Petition of the great-grandsons of Count Anastasio, No. 2078, of 12/24 August 1840). His portrait, made during his lifetime, is found in the Pignatorre house in Argostoli. He was the Head of the Anastasato Branch.
Malta: Anastasio Metaxa, (1650 -1714), Created Count 1691 with his brother Angelo , married 1683 to Chiara Stadero, with issue.
[121] Count ANDREA (b. 1688 – d. 1746)
Sturdza: b. 1688, d. 1748 — Governor of Ithaca, 1722, 1729.
Venezia: Count ANDREA, born 1688, died 1746. On his oil portrait, made at his death and preserved in the family, one reads the following inscription: "Andreas Co: Metaxa aetatis suae LVIII anno MDCCXXXXVI" — that is, that he was 58 years old at his death in 1746, and was therefore born in 1688. In 1716 he fought the Turks at the head of a company of 150 men, and shortly afterward commanded a battalion of 600 men, armed and equipped at his own expense, and distinguished himself at the Battle of Dragomesti as well as at the siege of Corfu, and received a certificate of good service from the Provveditore Generale Daniele Dolfin. He was appointed Governor of Ithaca in 1722 and 1725 (Loverdo, Constitution, p. 210 — History of the House of Metaxa, p. 70 — Cicelli, p. 409).
Malta: Count Andrea Metaxa, (1688-1746), Governor of Ithaque 1722-1725 , married with issue.

Venezia: Count NICOLÒ, born around 1727, "Syndic" in 1748 (History of the House of Metaxa, p. 70).
[171] Count DEMETRIO (b. 1730 – d. 1803)
Venezia: Count DEMETRIO, born around 1730, "Sopracomito" of the Galley of Cephalonia in 1755 (History of the House of Metaxa, p. 70). Died April 1803.
Malta: Count Demetrio Metaxa.
[172] Count SPIRO (b. 1730 – d. 1797)
Sturdza: b. c.1730 — Exiled to Russia c.1797; organized the revolt of the Mani, 1777.
Sturdza narrative (discrepancy): The accompanying Sturdza narrative adds a claim not found in the existing Venezia record: that Spiro and his brother Antonio (called Marino's "uncles" here) set out to raise the Peloponnese against the Turks in 1783, and that, despite Venice's opposition, they had "the fief of Meganisi -- granted to them in 1791 by the Doge Morosini" confiscated, with the family's comital title subsequently withdrawn. This does not line up cleanly with the existing record on three points: (1) the existing Venezia entry for this Spiro dates his and Giovanni's joint Peloponnese venture to 1777, in support of Count Orlov's fleet and the Mani chieftain Panaghiotis Benakis -- a different, earlier episode than a "1783" venture (a separate 1783 episode, in which Antonio was arrested at Simolata, is on record, but it reads as a Venetian crackdown on the brothers rather than a fresh anti-Ottoman expedition); (2) the Meganisi fief was granted in 1691, not 1791, and to Count Anastasio (92), not to Spiro or Antonio; and (3) Francesco Morosini, the doge credited with the 1691 grant, died in 1694 and so could not have been doge in 1791. Neither Spiro's nor Antonio's own Venezia entry mentions a fief confiscation or loss of title. Kept here as a flagged discrepancy rather than resolved -- it's possible the narrative is compressing/conflating two or three separate episodes and grants.
Venezia: Count SPIRO, born around 1730. Loverdo describes him thus: "Count Spiridione Metaxa had been educated in Italy; he was eloquent, had noble and generous sentiments, was a steadfast friend and a fearsome enemy, was highly ambitious, and was embittered against the Venetian Government over the execution of Count Marino Metaxa, his paternal uncle. He was enterprising and of an imposing and commanding figure." In 1760 he had taken part in the revolt of his uncle, Count Marino, and had come to an understanding with the Anino party to march against Argostoli. In 1769 he was appointed Ambassador to Venice. In 1777, when Russia sent the fleet of Count Orlov to rouse the Greeks against the Ottoman yoke, Count Spiro Metaxa and his brother Giovanni organized a corps of 3,000 Cephalonian volunteers and crossed into the Peloponnese to support the Prince of Mani, Panaghiotis Benakis, who besieged the town of Patras. Having been ordered arrested by the Venetian authorities, at the request of Turkey, he took refuge in Russia, where he died without issue around 1797 or 1798 (Loverdo, Constitution, pp. 176, 196 — Chiotis, p. 489, year 1784 — History of the House of Metaxa, p. 265 — Cicelli, p. 410).
Malta: Count Spiro Metaxa (1730 -1777 exiled to Russia).
[173] Count GIOVANNI (b. 1732)
Sturdza: b. c.1732 — Exiled to Russia.
Venezia: Count GIOVANNI, born around 1732, died in Russia without issue. He had followed his brother, Count Spiro, in the Peloponnesian campaign and the siege of Patras in 1777, and took refuge with him in Russia. The historian Loverdo Costin says of this (Ch. VIII): "After peace was made between the Russians and the Turks . . . the brothers Counts Spiridione and Giovanni Metaxa returned home and settled at the Villa Valsamata, converting the Monastery of St. Gerasimo, near the villa, into their headquarters, from which they threatened Argostoli, right up to the palace of the Venetian Provveditori. In the year 1782 the Venetian Government charged the Provveditore Generale da Mar, Fr. Foscari, with coming to Cephalonia to restore order. He arrived in the year 1783 with a large fleet . . . His Chancellor, Giacomo Mercati, resolved to send a military expedition of about 3,000 soldiers to Valsamata. The expedition could not capture the two Metaxa brothers, but it razed their palace in that village to its foundations. The two Metaxa brothers wandered from district to district and village to village, seeking financial help from their friends. They managed to obtain a little, and with it escaped from the island and went first to Missolonghi, then to Russia, where, committing inexcusable follies, they ended their days badly" (see also Historical Repository of Contemporaries, Paris 1861). The fief of Meganisi, near Lefkada, which had been granted by the Doge Fr. Morosini in 1691 to Count Anastasio Metaxa (92), grandfather of Counts Spiro and Giovanni, was confiscated by the Venetian Government, and their title of Count was withdrawn.
Malta: Count Giovanni Metaxa, (died in Exile in Russia).
[174] Count ANTONIO (b. 1735 – d. 1785) Malta: Count Antonio
Sturdza: b. c.1735, d. c.1785 — Imprisoned in Venice.
Sturdza narrative (discrepancy): See the discrepancy note on his brother Spiro (172): the accompanying Sturdza narrative's claim that Antonio and Spiro had a Meganisi fief confiscated and their comital title withdrawn after an 1783 venture does not line up cleanly with the existing record, which grants that fief to Count Anastasio (92) in 1691 and records no confiscation for anyone.
Venezia: Count ANTONIO, born around 1735, arrested in 1783 and sent to Venice, where he died in prison around the year 1785 (or 1799, according to Mavrojanni, p. 325). When in 1777 his brother, Count Spiro, roused the Peloponnese against the Turks, Count Antonio remained in Cephalonia to supply the expedition's needs from there, and, as Loverdo Costin says, "Count Antonio Metaxa, remaining on the island, made his headquarters at the Villa Simolata, from which he issued written orders, imprisoned individuals, and had set up another Government with the help of his henchmen." When in 1783 the Provveditore Generale Fr. Foscari sent a force of 3,000 men, under the command of Giacomo Mercati, against the Counts Spiro and Giovanni Metaxa, established at Valsamata, the historian Loverdo tells us (Ch. VIII, year 1783): "The military expedition then proceeded to the Commune of Simolata, where it arrested Count Antonio Metaxa, who was sent to Venice and imprisoned in the Fortress of Brescia. There he lived several years and ended his life miserably around 1785.
Malta: Count Antonio Metaxa, (died in Prison in Venice 1785).
[175] Count PIERO (b. 1742 – d. 1813)

In 1777 he had taken part, with his brothers, in the Peloponnesian campaign. Arrested, at the request of Turkey, he was condemned to ten years' imprisonment, which he served shut up in the dungeons of Venice. After serving his sentence, he returned to Cephalonia, married there, and was elected "Syndic" on 24 January 1803 (Loverdo, Constitution, p. 177 — Cicelli, p. 410 — Zois, Musachi, p. 354 — Chiotis, Historical Records — Chiotis, History of the Ionian Islands, Vol. N, p. 467 — Fr. Lenormand, Count André Metaxa and the Napist Party in Greece, p. 7). The will of Count Piero Metaxa bears the date 1 March 1810. One of the executors of this will is named "Sior Cavaliere Marinos Metaxàs Antzoniazàtos" [Greek text]. There also exists an earlier will of the same Count Piero Metaxa, undated, written probably before his marriage, and which perhaps was never executed. In it he leaves his entire fortune to his brother Giovanni ("Sior K. Tzuane" [Greek text]) in trust for the eldest son, by primogeniture, of each generation to come. In a new will, dated 24 June 1803, he names his wife Violetta guardian of his sons Anastasio, Andrea, Panaghi, and Giovanni, until their thirtieth year, and of his daughters Regina and Maria, until their marriage.

He took an active part in it at the head of a battalion of 400 men and 4 pieces of artillery, raised by himself in Cephalonia, with which he covered himself in glory at the bloody Battle of Lala, where he was severely wounded at the head of his troops. Scarcely healed of his wound, he went to the siege of Tripoli, in the Peloponnese, where the leaders of the Revolution were encamped, and was appointed, by the Provisional Government, Minister of Police. The English Government of the Ionian Islands accused him of high treason and confiscated his fortune on 18 June 1821. After a brief battle at Cocolata, the rebels were dispersed, and Count Andrea was arrested, while the two brothers were expelled to Corfu, where Count Cesare remained a few months in prison, Count Andrea remaining free as Senator. On 12 January 1802, Cesare Metaxa landed secretly at Cape Fiscardo in Cephalonia, where his brother Andrea was in hiding. With the help of two of their relatives, Stefano Foca and Giorgio Tipaldo Pavlin, they then roused the peasants and marched toward Omala, where they occupied, on 21 March 1802, the two Monasteries and the Mill found there. The troops marched immediately against them, under the orders of Captain A. Anino, and surrounded them on every side during the night. The next day, the 22nd, a fierce battle took place, lasting several hours. The army remained victorious, the rebels were dispersed, and Count Cesare and his two relatives were taken prisoner, Count Andrea being absent from the battlefield that day. On 25 March the three prisoners were tried and condemned to death, and the next day they were shot in the Public Lazaretto and their heads exposed on pikes in Rue St. Nicolò in Argostoli.
