[121] Count ANDREA (b. 1688 – d. 1746)
Sturdza: b. 1688, d. 1748 — Governor of Ithaca, 1722, 1729.
Venezia: Count ANDREA, born 1688, died 1746. On his oil portrait, made at his death and preserved in the family, one reads the following inscription: "Andreas Co: Metaxa aetatis suae LVIII anno MDCCXXXXVI" — that is, that he was 58 years old at his death in 1746, and was therefore born in 1688. In 1716 he fought the Turks at the head of a company of 150 men, and shortly afterward commanded a battalion of 600 men, armed and equipped at his own expense, and distinguished himself at the Battle of Dragomesti as well as at the siege of Corfu, and received a certificate of good service from the Provveditore Generale Daniele Dolfin. He was appointed Governor of Ithaca in 1722 and 1725 (Loverdo, Constitution, p. 210 — History of the House of Metaxa, p. 70 — Cicelli, p. 409).
Malta: Count Andrea Metaxa, (1688-1746), Governor of Ithaque 1722-1725 , married with issue.
[170] Count NICOLÒ (b. 1727) Venezia: Count NICOLÒ, born around 1727, "Syndic" in 1748 (History of the House of Metaxa, p. 70).
[171] Count DEMETRIO (b. 1730 – d. 1803) Venezia: Count DEMETRIO, born around 1730, "Sopracomito" of the Galley of Cephalonia in 1755 (History of the House of Metaxa, p. 70). Died April 1803.
Malta: Count Demetrio Metaxa.
[172] Count SPIRO (b. 1730 – d. 1797) Sturdza: b. c.1730 — Exiled to Russia c.1797; organized the revolt of the Mani, 1777.
Sturdza narrative (discrepancy): The accompanying Sturdza narrative adds a claim not found in the existing Venezia record: that Spiro and his brother Antonio (called Marino's "uncles" here) set out to raise the Peloponnese against the Turks in 1783, and that, despite Venice's opposition, they had "the fief of Meganisi -- granted to them in 1791 by the Doge Morosini" confiscated, with the family's comital title subsequently withdrawn. This does not line up cleanly with the existing record on three points: (1) the existing Venezia entry for this Spiro dates his and Giovanni's joint Peloponnese venture to 1777, in support of Count Orlov's fleet and the Mani chieftain Panaghiotis Benakis -- a different, earlier episode than a "1783" venture (a separate 1783 episode, in which Antonio was arrested at Simolata, is on record, but it reads as a Venetian crackdown on the brothers rather than a fresh anti-Ottoman expedition); (2) the Meganisi fief was granted in 1691, not 1791, and to Count Anastasio (92), not to Spiro or Antonio; and (3) Francesco Morosini, the doge credited with the 1691 grant, died in 1694 and so could not have been doge in 1791. Neither Spiro's nor Antonio's own Venezia entry mentions a fief confiscation or loss of title. Kept here as a flagged discrepancy rather than resolved -- it's possible the narrative is compressing/conflating two or three separate episodes and grants.
Venezia: Count SPIRO, born around 1730. Loverdo describes him thus: "Count Spiridione Metaxa had been educated in Italy; he was eloquent, had noble and generous sentiments, was a steadfast friend and a fearsome enemy, was highly ambitious, and was embittered against the Venetian Government over the execution of Count Marino Metaxa, his paternal uncle. He was enterprising and of an imposing and commanding figure." In 1760 he had taken part in the revolt of his uncle, Count Marino, and had come to an understanding with the Anino party to march against Argostoli. In 1769 he was appointed Ambassador to Venice. In 1777, when Russia sent the fleet of Count Orlov to rouse the Greeks against the Ottoman yoke, Count Spiro Metaxa and his brother Giovanni organized a corps of 3,000 Cephalonian volunteers and crossed into the Peloponnese to support the Prince of Mani, Panaghiotis Benakis, who besieged the town of Patras. Having been ordered arrested by the Venetian authorities, at the request of Turkey, he took refuge in Russia, where he died without issue around 1797 or 1798 (Loverdo, Constitution, pp. 176, 196 — Chiotis, p. 489, year 1784 — History of the House of Metaxa, p. 265 — Cicelli, p. 410).
Malta: Count Spiro Metaxa (1730 -1777 exiled to Russia).
[173] Count GIOVANNI (b. 1732) Sturdza: b. c.1732 — Exiled to Russia.
Venezia: Count GIOVANNI, born around 1732, died in Russia without issue. He had followed his brother, Count Spiro, in the Peloponnesian campaign and the siege of Patras in 1777, and took refuge with him in Russia. The historian Loverdo Costin says of this (Ch. VIII): "After peace was made between the Russians and the Turks . . . the brothers Counts Spiridione and Giovanni Metaxa returned home and settled at the Villa Valsamata, converting the Monastery of St. Gerasimo, near the villa, into their headquarters, from which they threatened Argostoli, right up to the palace of the Venetian Provveditori. In the year 1782 the Venetian Government charged the Provveditore Generale da Mar, Fr. Foscari, with coming to Cephalonia to restore order. He arrived in the year 1783 with a large fleet . . . His Chancellor, Giacomo Mercati, resolved to send a military expedition of about 3,000 soldiers to Valsamata. The expedition could not capture the two Metaxa brothers, but it razed their palace in that village to its foundations. The two Metaxa brothers wandered from district to district and village to village, seeking financial help from their friends. They managed to obtain a little, and with it escaped from the island and went first to Missolonghi, then to Russia, where, committing inexcusable follies, they ended their days badly" (see also Historical Repository of Contemporaries, Paris 1861). The fief of Meganisi, near Lefkada, which had been granted by the Doge Fr. Morosini in 1691 to Count Anastasio Metaxa (92), grandfather of Counts Spiro and Giovanni, was confiscated by the Venetian Government, and their title of Count was withdrawn.
Malta: Count Giovanni Metaxa, (died in Exile in Russia).
[174] Count ANTONIO (b. 1735 – d. 1785) Malta: Count AntonioSturdza: b. c.1735, d. c.1785 — Imprisoned in Venice.
Sturdza narrative (discrepancy): See the discrepancy note on his brother Spiro (172): the accompanying Sturdza narrative's claim that Antonio and Spiro had a Meganisi fief confiscated and their comital title withdrawn after an 1783 venture does not line up cleanly with the existing record, which grants that fief to Count Anastasio (92) in 1691 and records no confiscation for anyone.
Venezia: Count ANTONIO, born around 1735, arrested in 1783 and sent to Venice, where he died in prison around the year 1785 (or 1799, according to Mavrojanni, p. 325). When in 1777 his brother, Count Spiro, roused the Peloponnese against the Turks, Count Antonio remained in Cephalonia to supply the expedition's needs from there, and, as Loverdo Costin says, "Count Antonio Metaxa, remaining on the island, made his headquarters at the Villa Simolata, from which he issued written orders, imprisoned individuals, and had set up another Government with the help of his henchmen." When in 1783 the Provveditore Generale Fr. Foscari sent a force of 3,000 men, under the command of Giacomo Mercati, against the Counts Spiro and Giovanni Metaxa, established at Valsamata, the historian Loverdo tells us (Ch. VIII, year 1783): "The military expedition then proceeded to the Commune of Simolata, where it arrested Count Antonio Metaxa, who was sent to Venice and imprisoned in the Fortress of Brescia. There he lived several years and ended his life miserably around 1785.
Malta: Count Antonio Metaxa, (died in Prison in Venice 1785).
[175] Count PIERO (b. 1742 – d. 1813)
Sturdza: b. c.1742, d. 1813, Egi Cocolata — Sindaco, 1803; married 1787 to Violetta, daughter of Count Zuanne Loverdo.
Venezia: Count PIERO, born around 1742, died 1813, buried in the Church of St. Paraskevi in the village of Cocolata in Cephalonia, married around 1787 to VIOLETTA, daughter of Count Zuanne LOVERDO (340). In 1777 he had taken part, with his brothers, in the Peloponnesian campaign. Arrested, at the request of Turkey, he was condemned to ten years' imprisonment, which he served shut up in the dungeons of Venice. After serving his sentence, he returned to Cephalonia, married there, and was elected "Syndic" on 24 January 1803 (Loverdo, Constitution, p. 177 — Cicelli, p. 410 — Zois, Musachi, p. 354 — Chiotis, Historical Records — Chiotis, History of the Ionian Islands, Vol. N, p. 467 — Fr. Lenormand, Count André Metaxa and the Napist Party in Greece, p. 7). The will of Count Piero Metaxa bears the date 1 March 1810. One of the executors of this will is named "Sior Cavaliere Marinos Metaxàs Antzoniazàtos" [Greek text]. There also exists an earlier will of the same Count Piero Metaxa, undated, written probably before his marriage, and which perhaps was never executed. In it he leaves his entire fortune to his brother Giovanni ("Sior K. Tzuane" [Greek text]) in trust for the eldest son, by primogeniture, of each generation to come. In a new will, dated 24 June 1803, he names his wife Violetta guardian of his sons Anastasio, Andrea, Panaghi, and Giovanni, until their thirtieth year, and of his daughters Regina and Maria, until their marriage.
Malta: Count Piero Metaxa, (1742-1813), Sindaco of Cephalonia 1803 , married to Countess Violetta Loverdo, with issue.

Venezia: Count ANASTASIO, born 1788, baptized 8 April 1789 (Golden Book), married to EMILIA LOVERDO. He took an active part in the Greek Revolution of 1821 and fought with honor in several battles until 1824. He was Deputy to the Ionian Parliament and Senator (Chiotis, p. 411). In 1840 he submitted to the Ionian Senate, together with his brothers Andrea, Paisio, and Giovanni, and their cousin Anastasio, son of Count Cesare, the Diploma of the Doge Francesco Morosini dated 12 June 1691. The Senate confirmed, to them and to their legitimate descendants, the title of Count. In the "List of the Sinclito" of 1843 he is mentioned thus: "No. 387. Count Anastasio Metaxa, son of the late Count Pietro.

He was a member of the secret society "Filiki [Eteria]," which prepared the Greek Revolution of 1821. He took an active part in it at the head of a battalion of 400 men and 4 pieces of artillery, raised by himself in Cephalonia, with which he covered himself in glory at the bloody Battle of Lala, where he was severely wounded at the head of his troops. Scarcely healed of his wound, he went to the siege of Tripoli, in the Peloponnese, where the leaders of the Revolution were encamped, and was appointed, by the Provisional Government, Minister of Police. The English Government of the Ionian Islands accused him of high treason and confiscated his fortune on 18 June 1821. In 1822 he took part in the Special Embassy to the Congress of Laibach, but the Ambassadors were arrested at Ancona and had to turn back. On his return to the Peloponnese, he was appointed Deputy to the Assembly of Astros, member of the Executive in 1823, and Minister of War in 1825, and took part, with a contingent of Ionians, in General Kolokotronis's attack against Nauplia.
