I. User Interviews

Our user population are Wellesley College students who have been away from campus for an extended period of time (a semester or a year) due to taking a leave of absence, studying abroad, remote classes, or other circumstances. The interviews took place in each of the participants’ favorite places at a time that was convenient for the interviewee and the interviewer.

Interviewee 1

Sophomore who moved back home during the Spring semester of their first year due to Wellesley’s limited housing

Interviewee 2

Junior who studied abroad for a semester

Interviewee 3

Senior who took a leave of absence

Key Takeaways

The approaches to gratitude of our interviewees were all different some interviewees enjoyed expressing gratitude in written form while others preferred to exercise gratitude in a vocal manner in a social setting. Clearly the COVID pandemic affected all students, and was a major factor in all our interviewees’ transitions away and back from campus. As a college campus, regardless of class year or total time spent on campus, all students face the same stressors that come with such a unique college experience. A physical location which evokes happy memories or allows a student to destress is something that all of our interviewees had in common, and the physical campus seems to be one of the few things that has not been affected by the issues that the student body is facing.

II. Personas

With the insights from the user interviews, we created three personas:

III. Task Analysis

We synthesized our understanding of the problem domain described above through task analysis of three processes: express gratitude for a place on campus, finding new spots on campus, and meet other people who have spent time away from campus. We seeked to understand in which ways students were performing tasks that we envisioned our app users doing in our app.
