Visualization—Why?
Why did I choose a winter night as my visual representation? Originally, this project was supposed to be "autumn out your window" themed, but I ran out of both time and energy to change the current blue theme.
When thinking about that theme, I initially wanted to do leaves instead of snowflakes, but leaves are much less customizable. And more importantly, snowflakes have a mathematical geometry that I think translates better to data visualization (and I always thought it was super cool). Having this many snowflakes in a scene is also more natural than having a bunch of leaves.
But why this specific scene with a lamp? When I am walking through the snow In the winter and I see the snowflakes drifting through the darkness and hit the spotlight of these lamps, I always feel a soothing calmness in my body, almost a quiet focus that my mind rarely settles into. I believe it is the wonderous focus on being alive.
Notes App Explained
Focus labels explained (again)
- Low focus: I deviated significantly from my initial purpose.
- Mid focus: I dedicated some time to completing my initial goal.
- High focus: I spent most of my time accomplishing my primary objective.
I collected data in the notes app. I took a pretty fluid approach at first, just jotting down what I did as quickly as possible and the day (I found out after the first day I had to write down the dates and times too because my notes app does not have the history update).
I did not count an app if I used it after I had a goal in mind but before I started any work (think: the first few minutes before you start work). It turns out I use Spotify a lot less than I thought during the actual work period.
