Reflection Post Nr. 1

For this reflection post you'll read the article Design and Redesign in Data Visualization by Fernanda Viegas and Martin Wattenberg (the authors of the Wind Map).

After reading the article, please reflect on these questions:

  • Which of the four presented redesigns resonates the most with you and for what reasons?
  • If you were asked to critique a visualization, what criteria (or good practices) discussed in the article would you keep in mind to apply? You'll have a chance to apply them in the next reflection post.

Reflection Post Nr. 2

For this reflection post you'll spend some time perusing the website Dear Data by Giorgia Lupi (who is mentioned in the article you'll read for Post nr.1) and Stefanie Posavec (the author of Literary Organism we discussed in A Tour of interesting Visualizations).

After reading about the goal of the project and skimming the visualizations of the entries so far, pick one of them and read the details of what it represents (each week has a topic), how the data were collected and then study Giorgia's and Stefanie's visualization.

In your blog post reflect on the following:

  • Try to use what you learned from reading the article from post 1 to write a short critique of the chosen visualization. You can take sides (Team Giorgia or Team Stefanie) or you can be objective and critique or praise both.
  • Can you imagine doing such a project with a friend, but instead of drawing by hand, to perform the data collection and drawing with code? Discuss your idea. What it would be about?

Deadline: These posts are the two required #reflection posts for Week 9. As usually, you can write more posts if you wish. Also, don't forget to engage with your peers by commenting, answering, liking their posts. These two topics are very suitable for a dialogue.
